Spyware-Free Phones in 2021: We're being Squeezed!

Many changes have occurred in 2021 and it’s time to reassess our privacy phone choices again. Things that worked for us in 2020 no longer work. And we have to evaluate all our options.

What’s the status of Flip phones, feature phones, Linux phones in 2021? Did new Androids and IOS phones become more privacy friendly? Or Not? Will De-Googled phones continue to work in 2021?

I increasingly feel that technology itself will be fundamentally subverted and soon IRL, physical isolation will be our only choice.

i don’t think it’s "irreversible"…5G has lots of issues, some companies were talking about skipping it all together and I thnk they should

  7. Tiger Scott on October 11, 2021 at 8:35 am

5G is a weapons system. Don’t get a 5G phone. Don’t get jabbed. Get a good used 4g phone and put a custom Android ROM on it.

How about we all swap phones, and get someone else to buy our phones when we upgrade. That would mess about with their tracking

  12. John Martins on October 11, 2021 at 8:37 am

would ANYONE allow their neighbor or friends to have so much information about them?? but we would allow the "benevolent" Gov??

Hello Rob: I don’t see a video on GrapheneOS, Some say it is more secure than LineageOS. What do you say?

  14. CmdrColstel on October 11, 2021 at 8:41 am

Thank you MrBraxman for the valuable info !! You are right, some of these Google Apps, like contact tracing, are perfect for a police state.

Ha! It’s funny that the only option to degoogle this year is a Google device. No one hate the children of Israel more than the children of Israel.

Android is good for Pure OS , Librem 5 phone has kill switches.

  19. MrT2 this on October 11, 2021 at 8:46 am

So this is why my us samsung 7edge cannot be updated to android 11, because of the embedded qualcom snapdragon cpu. However European ones can as they have a different cpu, the exody(something like that). This is such 🐂💩. Not only are these companies fleecing us for more $ the tracking/privacy issues are increasing.

  20. Al kis on October 11, 2021 at 8:49 am

Swedish company called Ericsson are to blame for this.

  21. Manu Paredes on October 11, 2021 at 8:51 am

I find it strange you did not mention Sailfish OS, which mainly the best Linux based mobile OS that works incredibly well and is being developed by a Finnish company. Only a small set of devices are supported though.

hmm youtube is very friendly on my tor connection, should I worry?

  24. A. Yuuki on October 11, 2021 at 8:54 am

I don’t worry that much about my rights anymore, because the masses have made it clear that they just don’t care and I don’t have any children, or even feel very tied to this world anymore, but videos like this are great.
It’s just a shame that Google basically has a monopoly on user shared videos too.

  25. heather on October 11, 2021 at 8:55 am

Something interesting- the odd time that I am around truly wealthy people I notice that many have flip phones. They are just for emergencies and staying in touch. I’m not rich by any means but I have one just because I’m frugal and not addicted to the internet 🙂

Are there any Degoogle-able phones that use DC dimming instead of PWM? The flicker bothers my eyes.

  30. Wayne Holzer on October 11, 2021 at 9:01 am

I agree with you rob and the battle ahead is a long one when financially viable for me I hope to get a de Google phone here down under our government is pushing for anti encryption laws etc we are not doing anything illegal therefore it is unfair of the spying

  31. Mario on October 11, 2021 at 9:01 am

preferred carrier? Awesome as always Rob.

  32. Wes C-W on October 11, 2021 at 9:03 am

Is your phone connected to the internet?
You don’t have privacy, as much as you want to think

  33. Daniel Anear on October 11, 2021 at 9:04 am

Thanks for the info Rob, I don’t believe I’ve heard you mention your thoughts on the ClearPhone, I’d be really interested in this. I’ve got a few friends here in Australia that have one however I believe it’s an American product. Have you discussed this anywhere?

  34. mhansen09 on October 11, 2021 at 9:05 am

Hi Rob, have you or can you review the Freedom phone that’s being advertised as a non-tracking/selling data smart-phone? Thank you for all your info!

  36. hiteck007 on October 11, 2021 at 9:08 am

What can be done to De-google a samsung S9 and it’s not updated??

  37. G58 on October 11, 2021 at 9:08 am

@Rob Braxman Tech Thank you for these valuable updates and all the good work you do.

I was hoping to deploy one of my old Nokia 6310i phones here in the UK, but both are locked by the old carrier, and if 3G is going, they are no longer viable. That’s a shame because if we consider all the features (7 day battery life, plus weeks on standby and months switched off) in my opinion it was the best phone ever made.

I’m intrigued by your “Use Computers” advice. And thinking small in that regard, what’s your opinion of the GPD Pocket 2? Is it a viable as a security device?

    Thank you again brother

    Peace

  38. Lana Strouse on October 11, 2021 at 9:09 am

Your appreciated, keep up the fight. I use a flip phone. No banking on any phone. Just used as a phone. thanks

  39. Play Music on October 11, 2021 at 9:10 am

Nothing wrong with geofencing. It’s good because crooks are generally stupid. Yes it catches lots of innocent people as well. It is abused. It is creepy. But smart crooks (luckily there aren’t many) can just leave their phones at home. Even your de-googled phone is running the base band from Intel or arm and the TLA’s can still watch you. I wish the librem was a real thing.

  40. pkREX24 on October 11, 2021 at 9:10 am

hey does anyone know if its possible to dual boot android and ubuntu touch on the same phone?

  41. Sunny Artist1 on October 11, 2021 at 9:11 am

I’m looking for a phone without spyware to use for making calls and maybe texting. I don’t need to use my phone as a computer, nor do I want to at this point. Is there a way to get a de-googled phone that is more basic?

  42. Andra Book on October 11, 2021 at 9:14 am

Is it possible that some features are ”failing" is bc they’re overloading them. Like they’re asking too much of the hardware, it’s too much software running at the same time, and that’s why they’re crashing?

  43. Andra Book on October 11, 2021 at 9:18 am

    contact tracing is useless.

  44. gohstr on October 11, 2021 at 9:20 am

You’re saying on your site that VPNs outside the US AREN’T a good thing, when that’s actually what is BEST. The US Gov’t requires all US-based VPN providers to log activity. This means that you being based in the US, you’ll sell your customers out because Uncle Sam told you to. VPNs outside of Five, Nine and Fourteen Eyes jurisdiction are best. You’re in a position to take advantage of your customers.

  45. Jane Doe on October 11, 2021 at 9:21 am

Sunbeam F1 is awesome for privacy. I got rid of my new iPhones (I had a couple). They’re spying and coming for us. You must get rid of these flagship phones.

  46. Jerry F on October 11, 2021 at 9:21 am

It won’t be long in the near future and you’ll be a criminal just for wanting privacy. The worse part it that Google basically controls the world… like it or not.. no voting… no complaining… you will be helpless to Google… they already control everything…like it or not…they can make or break you… and that’s right now… so what is in store for the future ?

  47. Nemo Nada on October 11, 2021 at 9:21 am

Hugh Jeffreys has shown that even in Australia simply unlocking the bootloader can brick a Samsung

  48. MutoSan RC on October 11, 2021 at 9:22 am

wth I have an android phone and battery lasts 2-3 days. And I wonder why you with not one word mention Sailfish from Jolla. Lineage OS is NOT degooglelized as much as you think. If you want to go the right way try /e/

  49. Gregc eth on October 11, 2021 at 9:22 am

I hope we will have better souls at the helm Rob. I’d only add that 5G is also omni, but with greater resolution. Bless your bliss Blaxman.
