My first computer was a laptop with a 4th gen i7 and 4gb of ram. I upgraded the crap out of that thing. I installed a second 4gb stick of 1600 ddr3, a larger HDD, then an SSD.

It ran games good enough. 720p 30fps on low-medium settings. I even did cad modeling on that thing. I finally upgraded in 2019 when the Intel graphics weren’t enough to keep up with blender and modern esport titles.

  17. D L on January 18, 2021 at 5:42 pm

No, but if they’re really interested in tech and want to get a job in the field in the future, then go ahead, get them a computer that can run all of the latest games fairly well on at least low settings.

  18. BigDumbass on January 18, 2021 at 5:44 pm

I was already in college when my dad bought me my first PC.. we don’t have much but he managed to to buy "high end" machine that time… I can’t forget that day. Missing my Dad in heaven.

  21. D3IM0S on January 18, 2021 at 5:51 pm

It depends on the kid. If the kid is not going to mess with the inside of the PC and just going to press the power button, why not build them a beast PC? I did. I built my son a beast gaming PC, i spent over $2,000 on newegg back in 2013 and built my son his first gaming PC. I did use the PC too, for gaming.

I know my son loves demanding games, and he loves playing with Mods. And anyone that knows about PC gaming, knows that Mods eat up Ram, VRAM, and sometimes it puts a lot of load on GPU and CPU.

So i went a little higher than mid tier parts, it wasnt no extreme gaming PC thats really built for extreme overclocking or anything, it would be a waste.

But i did get an overclocking mid tier asrock board, i7 3770K OC @ 4.6ghz water cooled, i think i got x2 GTX 660 superclocked in SLI, then upgraded to a single GTX 680, 120GB OCZ SSD (When SSD’s were expensive, payed $114 for the 120GB), corsair 850W pSU and corsair 650D case, with the H100i AIO for the CPU. And a 2TB WD HDD.

And those parts were brand new from newegg, they were the newest generation at that time.

  25. Pipe Retrogamer on January 18, 2021 at 5:55 pm

I say, if you can get something that’s on par or has better performance than current gen consoles for an equal or lower price, it should be fine. That’s were I’d draw the line at least.

  26. Juliett A on January 18, 2021 at 5:56 pm

Yes. Because this isn’t 1950. And kids aren’t little aliens, they’re small humans who have to grow up and live in a world that doesn’t function without computers. You can’t even apply for a job at mcdonalds anymore without a computer.

  46. Redo on January 18, 2021 at 6:17 pm

I agree with the statement “all kid’s must experience bad FPS before they experience good FPS it builds character.”
I’ve played on laptop for about a year and a half, and I’ve suffered bad input delay frame drops and crashing. I harnessed the skills from the game and built up game sense. 5 months ago I built for 1st computer, specs I7 10700k, rtx 2070 super, 32gb 3200mhz ram. I’ve now become an esports player with $4000 earnings. If you struggle with ur frames don’t worry one day you will play games at high FPS. Stay strong fellow gamer 👊.

My sons first pc is our current project. I’m thinking I’m doing it all wrong for his and my first home build. I went 5900x hero xiii board and waiting on availability of 3080s. You steve and linus has been my genx ass pc education. I am the outside guy son is my polar opposite. This is me cracking and getting into his interests slowly buying his part and hopefully building something by the end of the year that doesnt need an upgrade tomorrow.
