Is This RC Car Radio Any Good? Spektrum DX5 Rugged Special Edition Transmitter Overview | RC Driver

The Spektrum DX5 Rugged Radio made quite a buzz in the RC community when it was released. It was a radio specifically built to endure the harsher side of RC. It was meant to handle the elements, water, dirt, snow, falling on the ground, possibly even being kicked around. The radio had cool features like a built in tool case and even a thumb control. Inside was loaded with Spektrum’s great tech. But a big problem was the touch panel. Some found it very difficult to use, but we managed our way through it. As any good company does, Spektrum monitored customer feedback and set off to change the issues for the better. The result is a new touch panel for the rugged radio as well as some new color options and you can easily use it with Spektrum Smart Technology. In this video, Greg goes over some of the radio’s highlights and things you need to know. Plus he takes it out for some testing on the trails and a quick bash session with a buggy. Is this the right radio for YOU?

I had one. Out of the box the scroll up would not work. Store refused a return or exchange because it was open. This controller makes a nice reactive shooting target. Other than that useless.

  2. Raul Calzada on September 16, 2021 at 11:57 pm

Hi, how can I identify if its the latest version of the radio when purchasing?

  3. STEVO D 313 on September 16, 2021 at 11:58 pm

I got the orange rugged, its still in the box, so I dunno what I think yet LOL

  4. Scott McLinden on September 16, 2021 at 11:58 pm

I have five Traxxas trucks. Can I use this for all my cars?

  5. Medo Vukel on September 16, 2021 at 11:59 pm

Where do I get a ramp like that ????

  6. Run&Gun RC on September 17, 2021 at 12:00 am

It may have been asked and answered already, but will I lose any telemetry info if I only have a Spektrum receiver (only) with a Hobbywing ESC/motor?

  7. The Wright 1 on September 17, 2021 at 12:02 am

This radio is definitely on my to get list!

  8. J&K Newb on September 17, 2021 at 12:03 am

Awesome review as always buddy thanks for sharing!! You have some skills that’s for sure being able to film and handle an RC like the bashers isn’t an easy task. Guarantee I’d be a free camera guy just to enjoy watching these reviews up close! 😜

  9. Ryan Joseph Francia on September 17, 2021 at 12:04 am

Question sir. Is the touch capability of the green version same with the orange version?

  10. Dodi Idris on September 17, 2021 at 12:09 am

Very Nice review… its true its not have backlights?

  11. RCTruckTalk on September 17, 2021 at 12:11 am

Will the SR515 give you voltage info or do you need the SRT6000T?

  12. Scott McLinden on September 17, 2021 at 12:12 am

I have Infraction V2, Typhon 6s. I would like to use the Rugged. Do I have to purchase any thing else to bind my Arrmas?

  13. NaturallyRC on September 17, 2021 at 12:12 am

Another great review. By no means a deal-breaker — I wouldn’t trade my DX5C for anything — but do you sometimes wish the trim buttons were located elsewhere? When crawling in the woods I often catch the sound of accidentally adjusting the steering or throttle trim, and I’m forever starting the timer by accident. The on-off switch needs love too. My unit liked to power up in my tote and beep beep beep while I was driving (down a four-lane highway typically) until I glued a little foam donut around the button. How about a setting that allows you to disable all external buttons by default? That would work.

  15. Michael Stewart on September 17, 2021 at 12:15 am

    Really nice review

  16. Ian Petrie on September 17, 2021 at 12:17 am

I’m amazed that this is considered a new thing. I came back into RC via FPV drone racing and this is pretty standard in that environment. I’d love to see RC cars stop using such backwards electronics.

  17. Love Peace on September 17, 2021 at 12:17 am

Hi can this radio work on my sr315 receiver?

  18. Mad Sexy on September 17, 2021 at 12:17 am

You can’t beat the Flysky GT5… Has a backlit screen for one! All for a 1/4 of the price of a DX5C, the Flysky active vehicle control is arguably better too.

  23. jogu123 on September 17, 2021 at 12:25 am

I would have wished that the Rugged Transmitters from HH would have had the same speed that the DX5Pro and DX6R have! Otherwise great product….

  24. Old-RC PLANE-Dude on September 17, 2021 at 12:27 am

SO many better radio options to buy a junky radio. (As in the junkiest tx in history, the specRECTUM)

Let the bashing commence. I stand MY ground.

  25. ExperimentFailLearnRepeat on September 17, 2021 at 12:28 am

I’m looking to get one of these. I am pretty new to the hobby. I have a Traxxas TRX 4 and some Ansmann and a WlToys vehicles. Will this work with them or do I need to get a specific receiver to work with it? Will I be able to bind to practically any vehicle without changing anything? Thanks. Basically, do I need to get a new receiver for every vehicle I own?

  26. Ken Kuczek on September 17, 2021 at 12:29 am

Hey Greg. I have a regular DX5C and love it. My son has a Futaba T4PLS and wishes he went with the spectrum. Keep up the great videos.

  27. ARH YT on September 17, 2021 at 12:31 am

Hello there do you have any roc cars spare as me and my brother really won’t one and we cant get one

  28. Alfred Yost on September 17, 2021 at 12:32 am

I have the original DX5 radio. I had problems with the touch panel. I did buy it from a local hobby shop called" Krazy Kevins". I am so glad that I did that. The owner of the hobby shop, checked out my radio and found out the touch screen was defective. He offered to send it back to get it repaired. The repair did take longer because of COVID-19, but I did get it back. My radio does work good now. I guess this just goes to show you to support your local hobby shop. You will get better support when something goes wrong. Think about it.

how easy is it to set it up for a tank? is it possible?

  30. RAY Johnson on September 17, 2021 at 12:34 am

Hey Greg… is there a radio out there that will work with the traxxas telemetry? I have the gps, temp and voltage in my rustler 4×4 vxl and have been looking for a new radio so I can get more distance… any suggestions.. thank you.. and please keep up the good vids you give alot of info that really helps…

  31. Anthony I on September 17, 2021 at 12:34 am

Spektrum really is making RC easier and more streamlined IMO. Smart batteries, Chargers..whats next? 🙂

  32. smokingbean on September 17, 2021 at 12:36 am

I got this radio about a week ago now. So far I am really happy with it. I will admit it did take some time to get used to the touch controls. And I am very happy with the green

  33. dannyoaks85 on September 17, 2021 at 12:36 am

I do not like mine. The rubber over the web of your hand rakes off all the time, the touch panel is a pain, it feels cheap. It’s just not for me

  34. Brad Marion on September 17, 2021 at 12:37 am

I have the losi db tenacity pro, losi 8ight nitro, and Arrma 4s Kraton. Do I need new Transmitters for all them with this remote? Thx!

  35. JRR on September 17, 2021 at 12:38 am

Can I use this radio to control a traxxas slash?

  36. Tim Vanasen on September 17, 2021 at 12:39 am

Hey Greg I got my Rugid green about 6weeks ago it has so many features I really like it, great video as usual 😎👍

  37. Grayme on September 17, 2021 at 12:39 am

New touch panel look good. I have the dx5c and the wheel drives me nuts sometimes. Especially when making adjustments on the fly, although the tuneablity and price point cant be beaten for quality.

  38. Rvlyssup on September 17, 2021 at 12:39 am

You should see the orange version, looks like a ToysRUs exclusive.

  39. Connor Hoosier on September 17, 2021 at 12:42 am

Can you send me every electronic part for my ruckus 4×4 1/10 i was trying to drive it and the it caught fire and melted all the electronics it shocked everything I’m just happy that it didn’t melt the actual body which is really surprising I can send you pictures if you want please. It’s my only car and I can’t afford a new one

  40. Glen Huff on September 17, 2021 at 12:42 am

Did they fix the distance issue and the lag time? I have the controllers for airplanes. Love how they work and they work great. But your transmitters for the cars and boats have not heard anything good about them.

  41. Scott Oblander on September 17, 2021 at 12:44 am

    Very Helpful thanks

  42. Nick Ing dazed & confused on September 17, 2021 at 12:45 am

I have been using the Spektrum telemetry since it first came out but before that tried a few standalone systems really useful for my gas tuning of engine and clutch’s, I still use the DX4R but also use the Dx6R also but must admit to still using the stock Traxxas system and Blue tooth on my phone pretty good but not as good as the Spektrum but I do find it near impossible to get stand alone telemetry sensors and the bus receivers here in the UK, even looking overseas is not that esy

  43. Usama Nawaz on September 17, 2021 at 12:47 am

    What’s it’s control range mate?

  44. Ben SP on September 17, 2021 at 12:47 am

Have 6 RC at home and 3 controllers. We are 3 in family having fun together and own 2 Spektrum DX5C same as Rugged just no rug. Love those take time to setup but get use to it. Way more versatility than a regular RTR. Grab wrong DX5C for a run oops no problems at all. Add new vehicle, created a binding wire oops was at home. Could RC no problems and daughter setting stay in her remote control ready to be switch back for her Losi. But need get use to it. Great video love this unique green maybe will add 1 more Spektrum radio and replace the RTR of my son hum 🤔 lol yep he is going to get DX5C so I will use the Rugged Green 😝

  45. FPV FANATIC on September 17, 2021 at 12:50 am

Sell me the older DX5 Rugged

  46. Prime Time Reviews on September 17, 2021 at 12:51 am

Great vid. Crazy that I just got my rugged today for my SCX10 iii RTR. So far so good. Dig set up was a bit of a pain. Going to do the two speed this week. You should do a vid showing how you set up the dig and would set up a two speed.

  47. TastyPear on September 17, 2021 at 12:53 am

I got the DX5 Rugged when it first came out and awhile setting it up I accidentally turned the contrast all the way down. Making it impossible to see what was on the screen. This was a result of the touchpad not doing what I wanted and sometimes having a mind of its own bouncing through menus or scrolling when I just wanted to press "OK". I called Horizon and they had to tell me the "sequence" of getting back to the contrast menu from boot up. I wrote down the sequence and made probably 100+ attempts before I got it… my only feedback being a repetitive beep.

  48. Shawn Shanigan on September 17, 2021 at 12:55 am

Did you have any issues with the dig when you bound it? My dig servo was whining after binding with the new rugged.

  49. J. Cruz on September 17, 2021 at 12:55 am

I got the standard one with the new touch panel. Just to confirm….

  50. James Turner on September 17, 2021 at 12:56 am

Geez! I wish I would have known that they were going to change all the touchpads going forward. I just purchased a Dx5 rugged last week. Feeling like I got jipped.
