i recently had an amp installed and shortly there after i noticed a cloud of smoke inside my car. the smoke smells bad, like burned goat shit, and makes you want to puke. the smoke is coming from my car stereo, not the amp. the installers tried to blame my LED bulbs but i told them the lights only turn on when i open the door and thats for a few seconds at a time. i replaced the bulbs with OE bulbs and the smell of burning wires is still there. what is causing something to obviously overheat?

  15. IndyStreetRacer on January 18, 2021 at 5:40 pm

I’d like to know what other single strand types of wire you use. Like what you use for remote turn ons.

  16. Ian Summers on January 18, 2021 at 5:40 pm

A thought on the power wires you showed in those kits…

In any conductor, excess positive or negative charge accumulates at and distributes itself across the surface of the conductor so that charge density is nearly uniform. This is because like charges are repellant (and unlike charges tend to pair off and neutralize). So the point being, in any sort of conductive object, positive or negative charge will travel along the outer surface. This includes electrons traveling (i.e. "current"). In simpler terms, current travels on the outside surface of your wires. Where I’m going with this, is that if you have a tinned wire…the resistance of that wire is largely going to be determined by the plating. So oxygen free copper, versus regular copper, whatever… the resistivity is predominantly dictated by the plating on the wire. I haven’t looked up the resistivity of different metals to say concretely, but I would hazard a guess that your best value is to not worry that much about what sort of copper it is, and just buy the absolute fattest wire you can reasonably afford (provided that girth is metal, not insulation). Only once I was down to zero gauge wire would I worry about alloy at all, and even then, only if I was some sort of SPL competitor trying to wring every last dB out of my amps. Your ROI of money and attention is bigger elsewhere IMO.

Theory is one thing, but actually getting to see you apply knowledge to create these systems is really great. Thank you for sharing your considerable fabrication skills and knowledge with all of us. I am learning a lot about installation methods, materials and best practices from your videos.
    Ian

Hello There. I do planing use 4 channel 720W amp but using 4ohm speakers so its 4x60w – 240W not 720W at 2ohm do I have to use 720w or 240W to calculate what wire to use? same think for my mono 320w amp for sub 320W or 150W bridged at 4ohm both AB class – Thanks!!

  18. Bob Riddle on January 18, 2021 at 5:41 pm

That covers it good Mark, that much info won’t come from a question or two when just starting out.

  32. Christopher Gott on January 18, 2021 at 6:00 pm

I just got my shipment from KNU today and I wanted to give people a heads up. I ordered 12ga. speaker wire for the doors and rear, and 8ga. for my subs. I got the Karma SS line and they’re freaking HUUUUGE, LOL. The 8ga. is damn near the size of 1/0 welding cable. I have NO clue how I’m going to get the 12 ga. wire through the drivers side door. It’s close to 4 ga. wire in size and I have an ’03 Taurus that has the stupid hard plastic cylinder for a boot. Mark, you owned a Taurus, what size speaker wire did you use for the doors and how did you get it through? Thanks Mark, and for everyone else, the wire looks and feels solid as hell and has a very L-A-R-G-E diameter.

  33. Hennessy * on January 18, 2021 at 6:03 pm

Is there a correct way to connect and amplifier and 2 subwoofers ( I don’t know much ) local shop simply splice from the rear deck speaker ? …

  44. dblr3000 on January 18, 2021 at 6:12 pm

How about making a video about when we should use high end RCA cables and if they’re worth the money?

  45. Yasir Mahmood on January 18, 2021 at 6:14 pm

I have 4 speaker – tweeters, 1 amplifier and 1 subwoofer in my car. I need to upgrade the wiring.
Which is the best wring you recommend for best quality and protection (specially the guage)?
And for my knowledge, for my above setup, will I be needing only 3 of 4 things you mentioned:
    1. One Fuse for protection.
    2. Power Wiring between Battery and Amp and for ground wiring.
    3. Amplifier to Speakers wiring.
