How to set EQ settings on head unit. Tune Equalizer to setup and adjust like a pro!

In this video I show you how to setup and adjust your equalizer (EQ) on your head unit to get the best sound possible from your car audio gear. Every head unit and setup is different, but the principle will remain the same.

Remember, Equalizer settings are preferences and can/should be adjusted to your personal taste. With that said. This method will optimize the frequency spectrum to give you a richer/fuller sound stage.

Any questions, please feel free to ask!

Apologies for asking such a noob question. But, would i still need to adjust the crossover at the amp after setting the "smiley" on my HU? I’m guessing, yes?
    Thanks for the informative vid.

  8. James Mawhorter on February 10, 2021 at 5:32 pm

Do you max out your speaker level as well??? Like you did your sub level

  9. tobo26 on February 10, 2021 at 5:33 pm

The smile for me is too much treble so I lower the high Hz range down a bit and make a smirk.

  10. Crazy SOB on February 10, 2021 at 5:35 pm

What if I got one of the old school aftermarket radios. I don’t have a graphic design like that but I do have the options. So there is no way to tell if I have a smiley face

Hi new sub here, I A little bit of what I have here a pioneer 4200nex head unit with time aliment crossover built in unit source level adj on a skv2 2500.1 for two 10’s skar evl in a ported tuned box that I built tuned to 32hz my high & mids are pioneer z series components in the front coax in the rear doors on a pioneer gm-d8604 by the way all this is in a suburban that I use for traveling with the family, now I ordered the smd dd1 in witch I find very expensive but every shop here in Miami says I tune by ear so unless I go back to Tampa where my guy is in clear water whom by the way has a video on my install all pioneer system in a suburban check it out on YouTube by 5 star stero now the problem im having is my highs & mids amp is clipping @ 26 volume I’m use to 29-30 volume before I changed the sub amp to the skar & thats all I did please advise thank you for these videos very much appreciated.

Sorry if this is too long. I appreciate your videos!! Keep up the great work helping us audio enthusiasts. I was wondering your thoughts on tuning the eq with Pink Noise and Sound Spectrum Analyzer. It almost looks like a sine wave instead of a smiley face. I have 13 band eq Pioneer AVH-210EX. Having a -3db slope higher at the low end and lower at the high end, I noticed everything is loud but not ear-piercing. I am running 4-6.5 Kicker CS with Kenwood KAC-8401. Also going to have a Kicker 8 in hideaway for the low end. Would I adjust the eq before the gains of each amp? If so, where should I have the gains at when tuning the eq or does it matter what volume it is for using Pink Noise? Thank you for your time!

  19. oscar garcia on February 10, 2021 at 5:47 pm

Very awesome video, and every single video on your channel. i got a question tho. Do you think you could do a video on how to set up the crossover from the head unit for the front, mids and subwoofers? or what do you think? do you recommend using it or not? Thank you.

  22. JT OnIt on February 10, 2021 at 5:49 pm

Hey bro great content 👌 I was wondering if I wanted to put a volume control knob on a 4 channel amp that I plan to run to my mids and highs enclosure in the back. Would I need to buy 4 control knobs to control each channel???

  23. Jordan C on February 10, 2021 at 5:50 pm

What about the SLA setting on my pioneer HU, should i have it +4 or just leave it at 0?

  24. Denali 24’s on February 10, 2021 at 5:52 pm

Loving your channel videos are great!👍 My question is I have a pioneer head unit with a wide ban EQ like your Kenwood in the video but I also have a Audiocontrol DSP do I set the EQ on the head unit to flat and use the DSP EQ or vise versa? Thank you

  27. Dj Gelo Official on February 10, 2021 at 5:54 pm

Alright so , i do have the smiley face but since i have stock location (Infinity Reference) speakers , my thought was that since i have a 1200w sub amp , then i will have the eq from 500hz and bellow to be flat 0 db since i dont want the door speakers to do bass when thats what the sub is for … so idk … tho if i amplify later (i plan to do) the door speakers i can set a low pass and do the full smiley face.

  28. Enzo on February 10, 2021 at 5:56 pm

I have a voice amp but stock door speakers but i have 4 8’s for the lows. What door speakers and tweeters do you recommend? I’ll need 2 6.5, 2 6×9, and 4- 1 inch tweeters. 2 for the dash and 2 for the back door.

  34. kwantoon on February 10, 2021 at 5:59 pm

I have been preaching this for years, surprisingly very few took the advice. I adjusted this way because it sounds the most balanced and correct, I honestly didn’t have any understanding of the actual science involved.

Thanks for reaffirming what I believe to be correct.

  38. Team Member on February 10, 2021 at 6:06 pm

Not sure if you are familiar with the physical equalizer, but if you are, should the input gain or aux gain on the top set to maximum?

  39. GURSHAM DORE on February 10, 2021 at 6:07 pm

Most times I start flat on my eq settings then work on lows and highs 1st. I always leave my mids last. Most ppl that I know do install tend to do the mids last

  40. Richard Garcia on February 10, 2021 at 6:08 pm

I have pioneer deh-x6700bt single din HU . How would I set the eq to smily face curve it doesn’t have a full display . also should I use amp lp filter and subsonic filter or just use the HU crossovers? Thank you for your time

  41. steve jr on February 10, 2021 at 6:10 pm

I have a question. For every day listening purpose what hz should i tune my sub port box?

  42. GnosisMan50 on February 10, 2021 at 6:11 pm

Your knowledge is appreciated but who is your audience? Is it the average Joe like me who is installing a car radio for the first time? If so, you lost me with too much info, valuable though it may be. Many car radio installers ought to consider the term “show and tell” It’s Ok to have more show than tell (or vise versa) but too much of one or the other can be counterproductive. When it comes to car radio installation, I feel that SHOWING how to install it is more important than TELLING how to do it. There is a difference between an instructional video and another one that is made to entertain.

Dude this video came in really hand I’ve had sound installed in my car for almost a year now, I watched ur video changed my setting yesterday and my car sounds like I just added another sounds system, dude it is LOUD it’s ridiculous, thank u so much man🙏🏾

  45. Juha Peltola on February 10, 2021 at 6:17 pm

You really shoudn’t do this. First take freq response of your car via mic. Then you can start to tune what is your problem areas. Maybe your car peaks 60hz and then even make it worse by just doing random eq…. Check out pssound and learn about tuning.

I am so glad I’ve found your channel. I’ve just finished watching three of your videos about Amp setup, Amp Tune and now this one, my question is once I setup the Amp to the my desired settings will adding a pre-amp EQ to my Stock OEM deck and setting that up effect the amp setup or will I be fine? I’m sure you talked about it I’ve probably missed it. Keep up the good work.

This week on my ddx8905. I found out.
Took eq off flat and output sucked. Set graphic eq to flat again and she is way louder.

  49. Jordan H on February 10, 2021 at 6:20 pm

What do you recommend for HU’s that only have a 3 band EQ? I recently upgraded mine for a higher voltage HU, only to realize I went from a 9 band to 3 band EQ.
