Hollywood Screenwriter Attempts To Write A Scene in 7 Minutes | Vanity Fair

We challenged screenwriter Emily Carmichael to write a scene on camera–in seven minutes. Emily talks through her process and takes us into the mind of a screenwriter. She had only seven minutes to write the first draft, five minutes to write the second draft, and three minutes to write the third draft–see what she ended up with.

    Great class.
Please don’t put a drum or music track behind your lessons. It’s distracting. It’s alright just to hear your voice , I promise that we won’t require drums.

This "Scene Writing" thing is bloody hard. It took me a whole 3 days to write my first screenplay. It takes time to understand, imagine, construct an imaginary situation and write it all down in this form.

  14. Thunderbirds705 on June 8, 2021 at 5:25 am

This video inspired me to write scripts for episodes. I’m pretty sure it has inspired others who like to script.

  15. Ale wallabies on June 8, 2021 at 5:26 am

    Hello,
Could you explain the transition of the Cross Cut script to me?

I want to make in my script a scene of conversation on the phone exchanging dialogue and images. In the script it is expressed with the transition Cross cut ?!

  16. Diane Heard on June 8, 2021 at 5:26 am

Watching this explains a lot about tv and movies these days.

  17. David J. Reid on June 8, 2021 at 5:26 am

Shes creative but a terrible writer. 2nd DRAFTS arent EDITING an existing document. You print it out. TYPE THE WHOLE THING AGAIN!!!!!!! argh!!!!! this hurts!!!!!!

  32. Vanity Fair on June 8, 2021 at 5:45 am

Thanks for the love for this video! A few things:
    1) Emily used Final Draft 11.
    2) Many people have asked us about the length of the video — the clock was paused every time we asked Emily to explain what she was doing.
    3) What movie genre should we do next?

  33. flavia uwu on June 8, 2021 at 5:46 am

  42. The Tik-Tok Man on June 8, 2021 at 5:59 am

In 2048, cops would not ‘draw weapons’, weapons [possibly energy-based] would be permanently ready to fire. Old age thinking. EPIC FAIL.

  43. Electivire BFF on June 8, 2021 at 6:00 am

so she’s the one who ruined the pasific rim series. ok.

  44. Cinematic Jaedynn on June 8, 2021 at 6:00 am

It would’ve been sweeeet if they made a film based off of what she wrote

  45. MARK-ZUBER Rodrigues on June 8, 2021 at 6:01 am

Timing of the script only 07:00 minutes. Youtube video 26:09 minutes.

    Script writing is easy.

  46. Emma Kappeyne on June 8, 2021 at 6:02 am

The description little digital voice makes me like the idea of arnaut being kind of like a kid A.I with a human like connection to haley and glenn, an A.I with kind of a cute personality that is still being trained, and can therefor sometimes be very unpredictable. Also when she seems to say he is not ready for this. It seems to imply a personified A.I. This would also make the betrayal of glenn not only that he did something they didn’t agree on, not only doing something that could be dangerous (as a weapon), but also putting this A.I person-ish thing that she has a conncetion too at risk. It would make the betrayal an emotional one. It would also imply that not only hayley is betrayed but arnaut as well, even if he doesn’t know it. It was a really quick writing prompt but i could expand into a very interesting narrative.

  47. Matthew Kaelin on June 8, 2021 at 6:02 am
