Car Batteries or Capacitors: Which Should I Install? | Car Audio Tips

Looking to add a capacitor or upgrade your car battery, but not sure which to get? In this video, Sonic Electronix explains some of the details about adding batteries (such as an XS Power or Kinetik Power Cell) vs adding capacitors.

While upgrading or adding batteries is the best solution, there are many that prefer to install capacitors when they upgrade their car audio system. As a general rule at Sonic Electronix, “When in doubt, choose a battery”.

    How about 6 super caps
Maxwell 2.5 volts at 2600 farads each with a battery isolater
I’m curios if anyone has done this for a 1000 watt amp at 2 ohms.

  2. Uche Azuakolam on December 21, 2020 at 7:35 pm

Can you use both n if so would u still need to upgrade your alternator?

  3. nev ets on December 21, 2020 at 7:36 pm

Capacitor always f something up. Add buzz or suck ur battery dead if not driven every day

  4. jordan marker on December 21, 2020 at 7:36 pm

Running a 2f cap and 2 batteries and my lights dim to almost nothing. I get drops down at 9.5 to 11. Getting ready to order a mechman 500 to take care of it.

What if I just Installed an amp/sub and my battery dies could a capacitor fix that??

  6. Jokey Jesus on December 21, 2020 at 7:39 pm

I just got a cap because I need consistence voltage to my amp and I don’t have the money for a good battery at the moment

He misused the term ‘power’ and thereby misstated a couple facts. Contrary to what the gentleman stated, a capacitor certainly is a good component to increase the power capabilities of your hybrid electrical supply. It does this better than adding more battery capacity. In contrast, a battery excels at its ability to store and supply energy. This comment won’t make sense to those people who can’t or won’t differentiate between the meaning of the words power and energy. This comment is for people that understand (or want to understand) the meaning of those two words. Understandingly, most people won’t understand this because the words are used incorrectly all the time. In short, capacitors are good for supplying brief high power demands, and batteries are good for supplying longer duration energy needs. For context, and roughly speaking, a large capacitor contains approximately the same amount of energy that an AA battery contains, whereas the former can supply thousands of watts, the battery can supply only about 5 watts. Whether or not a capacitor is a good idea for your audio needs is entirely dependent on the battery, wiring, alternator and capacitor options, but good capacitors certainly provide great advantages to hybrid electrical storage systems.

Would a hc600 blu kinetik battery keep my system from draining main battery? I have 2 15 jbl and 4000w power akoustik and I would be bumping my system and battery light came on. Later on I tried to start car and it was dead..

Battery’s are far superior than capacitors…..Problem solved

  16. Roberto Cardona on December 21, 2020 at 7:46 pm

Had capacitor running a simple Alpine MRP-500.1, capacitor caught fire and almost fried my trunk. Ditched the capacitor and installed a Hifonics HFI 1500.1d. Installed Kinetik HC1400 Blue. Lights still dim a little, but the sound quality has gone up considerably.

  17. Jeffrey Pate on December 21, 2020 at 7:46 pm

I have a question as far as checking the UF value for the capacitor would you check it like you would a regular capacitor let’s say for an air conditioner check in the uf value to see if maybe the capacitor still good cuz somebody sold me one and before I install that I want to make sure it has the right UF value it says 2 million UF for something like that but when I tested it it came nowhere near that. How would I do that?

  18. john argue on December 21, 2020 at 7:46 pm

My headlights were dimming when my bass hits. I already did the big 3. I recently put a capacitor and headlights are solid. Capacitor I got was like $50. Some People don’t like it, maybe they bought a crappy one. Alternator is 14.6 strong. 2amps, 1k watt each, 2 farad cap.

Just bought the stinger spp1300c I have a difficult car though . It’s a Chevy hhr it says that battery wont fit but it meets my 600cca oe requirement it’s 610 and way better than the ac delco . It’s a half inch taller and not as long by . .4 inches or so but I have the extra height clearance and If I have to use one spacer on the side I can use almost anything a paint mixing stick cut to size or maybe rubber or foam .

I might make a video since btw there are NO current battery upgrades for the Chevy HHR I looked everywhere it’s group 90. Needs 600cca odyssey makes a group 90 that’s 540cca . Optima . XS I literally checked every battery company .

The Stinger is the closest that will fit maybe I’ll make a video .you guys need to do a big 3 upgrade video for the HHR btw it has that stupid power box up front battery in rear it’s going to be such a pain .

Wish I had a reference to go off . Thanks

  27. Da V on December 21, 2020 at 8:01 pm

How would a capacitor work of you don’t have the battery power to back it up?

  28. Christian Quiambao on December 21, 2020 at 8:01 pm

I have a double din and I have aftermarket door speakers that are connect to it, and I have 2 12 07’ cvr kicker subwoofers with a 1,000 watt amp. I don’t wanna drain my battery so I’m wondering if I should go for a capacitor or battery ? New to sound systems so just wondering 🤙🏽

  29. JUAN NARANJO on December 21, 2020 at 8:01 pm

I have 2 kicker vx subs 750 watts rms each and an amp for the door speakers and amp for subs kicker kx 1600 watts rms u think I need 2 batteries

  30. Rogelio Salazarjr on December 21, 2020 at 8:03 pm

Upgrade to big for not 3 and a second battery that’s it

  31. SilentGhilly on December 21, 2020 at 8:03 pm

They do the same thing, a battery just last longer. I’m tied of people saying capacitors are useless they serve purpose why do you think there inside the amplifier you idiots.

  32. Ronald Dicicco on December 21, 2020 at 8:06 pm

Do I need a capacitor when I’m having my stereo system running on two batteries

*So they will make a truck… That’s good. For some time now I’ve been figuring "If Tesla really wants to make money, they’ll make a viable ( **lovy.biz/44oi** )1/2-ton LUV fleet-truck.". And they plan to make Class-8 semi-tractors & buses as well? Makes me look forward to the first luxury EV motor-home, built with fixed roof-top & retractable solar panels, all powering the EM-induction cook-top, water-heater & washer/clothes-dryer. Add a water collection system with reverse-osmosis treatment & UV-sterilizing, and you’ll be set to survive anywhere, anytime!*

I have a .5 farat capacitor in my car witch i hear is rated for 500 watts, but my 2 amps are putting out a total of 1300 watts. Is that killing the potential bass that my speakers could be putting out if i didnt have the capacitor?

  38. Shawn Griffin on December 21, 2020 at 8:19 pm

I am wanting to run two Orion amps, each are putting out 2500 watts rms and in addition a 2000 watts rms for highs. Will a 50 fraud capacitor go the trick?

  39. Joshua Henson on December 21, 2020 at 8:19 pm

So, should I go with 2 batteries or a capacitor? Can I use both? I’m not a guru at this so please let me know. Trying to settle my own debate. Opinions???

  40. Cedric Zebelle on December 21, 2020 at 8:20 pm

    What if I get both

  41. braidyn sundly on December 21, 2020 at 8:20 pm

long story short buy a nice battery and have two or more. also buy quality wires and a quality high out put alternator. all of this wired correctly and youll have no problems

  42. Mark Nowakowski on December 21, 2020 at 8:20 pm

I’m getting ready to install my system in my second ride. I have multiple amps totaling around four thousand watts continuous power. Typical set-up subs, woofers, mid – woofs, mid’s and tweet’s. Been thinking about adding extra batteries for the amps so I’m not stealing starting battery juice. Who makes the best batteries for my application and alternator/s if my car has room for bigger or multi alts. How much larger would the big 3/4 upgrade cables need to be so my system runs flawlessly and never drains any of the batteries or overtax the charging system while supporting all the extra amp batteries??????? HELP

  45. Randall M on December 21, 2020 at 8:25 pm

Contradictory commentary. You first mentioned that a capacitor can help with occasional headlight dimming, but then when you discuss the battery, you said if you’re headlights are dimming, you must get a better battery. That’s confusing, because what good is adding a capacitor for dimming headlights, if dimming headlights dictates the installation of a more powerful battery?

  46. J. Morrison on December 21, 2020 at 8:27 pm

Ok a car or truck stock charging system has one alternator and one battery, do you really expect that one stock alternator to keep up the charging demands of two batteries. They need to at least mention upgrading your alternator.
