Is that how the third party coverage works in the US? Because in Europe, no matter through which travel agency You’ve paid Your extra coverage with, if it’s not paid at the counter, Your excess amount is still higher, and there’s still a deductable.

In case of damage, You pay up to full damage cost, or up to excess amount, and only then You claim that amount from the travel agency You’ve booked with and payed extra insurance at.

There are cons and prons for booking through provider directly, or taking the travel agency (priceline, expedia) route.

HIGHLY recommend you take pictures of the vehicle or video inside/out when you pick up and drop off. Our rental was wet when we picked it up and something that looked like a water drop was actually a chip in the windshield. They tried to charge us $750 to fix it.

And always get a receipt when you turn car in. My husband declined the insurance and when he asked for the receipt, they took forever to give it to him and insurance was conveniently added despite declining it.

Boy did I need you when Enterprise screwed me! They double charged me 2 yrs ago and I still am fighting it!😩

Renting car sucks. Cant rent without a credit card

  8. Nate Hovee on September 2, 2021 at 10:42 pm

So, I’ve got a quick, useful story to add regarding credit card coverage (collision damage waiver). I am American, but I live and work overseas. While visiting family in the States, I rented a car at LAX and used one of my Bank of America Visa credit cards to pay for it. It had the collision damage waiver benefit for rental cars, so I didn’t get any additional insurance on top of that. The following day, in rural California, I hit a deer that suddenly ran onto the freeway. Fortunately we were all safe in the vehicle, but the front of the car was an absolute mess. Very long story short, I eventually received a bill from a collections company for well over $10k!! (The car had likely been written off/ auctioned off.) After months of talking with Visa’s Card Benefits Services and sending all types of paperwork and documentation, Visa negotiated a settlement with the collections agency, and I ended up paying $0! In fact, I was surprised to learn that Visa’s fine print (for my specific card) even permitted me to receive full reimbursement for the towing charges I had paid out of pocket the day of the accident ($250+). Obviously, I was tremendously grateful. All the fine print for my card ended up working in my favor in this specific situation. Here are lessons I learned that I will pass on to you: Read the fine print of the benefits that come with your specific card!!! Find out if there are limits to coverage, such as the number of days you’ll be renting a car AND type of coverage offered by the card (secondary or primary). Check on coverage for domestic rentals vs. international rentals. If you accept any insurance from the rental car company or a third party (which I am not discouraging whatsoever here), just be aware that your credit card benefit might not cover you in the same way. Obviously, I’m very fortunate nobody was hurt AND no other vehicles or people were involved in the accident. That certainly could have changed the financial outcome dramatically. Again, read the fine print… I’d even encourage you to take ten minutes to call your Card Benefit Services to ask questions about the coverage they provide.

40 yr old guy here who’s never rented a car before … just trying to find out how much a one-day car rental in Portland in 2021 would cost including all the insurance paperwork handling fees and whatever other BS little hidden fees all added up like ‘how much out the door’ so to speak… Anyone who’s not paid to switch and bait me got a straight answer for me? I’m not dumb, I get that it will be a ballpark number not an exact number or more likely it will be what you paid a few months ago kind-of-thing not necessarily what I will pay next month. I get that but can someone give me an idea of how much to be ready for… I’m not trying to rent anything fancy just whatever they have that can carry one driver and one passenger… so no need for a Camaro or Bentley just a Corolla or Civic or something would do. (Not counting gas)

  17. David Schulman on September 2, 2021 at 10:53 pm

State farm pays up to $500 of the deductible if you carry the car rental coverage. Insurance may still find out about the accident even if the rental insurance was purchased.

  18. CtheDiva E on September 2, 2021 at 10:55 pm

How will these tips work if I’m coming from another country?

  19. Crystal Shorter on September 2, 2021 at 10:56 pm

Matt do all car rental companies require you to have insurance. I don’t own a car, I used to use zip car whenever I needed use of one but they charge by the hour which can be expensive. So because I don’t own a car will car rentals refuse renting to me because I don’t have insurance?

  20. Aaron D on September 2, 2021 at 10:57 pm

Thanks, Matt – you do seem to cover it all.

  21. Vlad Ladchuk on September 2, 2021 at 10:58 pm

Turo is a great app! You get to rent a car from an individual and often times after all of fees combined, my total was a lot less!

  22. Valerie BK on September 2, 2021 at 11:00 pm

    Do these still work?

  30. Dan Moritz on September 2, 2021 at 11:10 pm

I was going to rent a subcompact for a few days added on to cross country flight.

The car, which I didnt desperately need was going to be one and a half times AGAIN of the cross country airfare. What in the …?

I thought even if I get a high taxi fare, I’ll STILL save five hundred dollars over getting a rental car.

Small cars never used to be nearly so costly to rent. Its pure rip off. How about I just dont rent, their crap car, nor deal with a shyster agent, at all. There !

  33. fangirlfoodie on September 2, 2021 at 11:16 pm

wait, what was that about the full fuel option? I didn’t understand it.

  34. Charles Cahoon on September 2, 2021 at 11:17 pm

I took a trip north and flew into Chicago Midway. Cheapest rate I found at the airport was Budget…almost 900 bucks for four days on a Rav 4 SUV. Taking a 10 mile Uber trip to an off airport Budget site, I paid 340 bucks total. This happened on a pre Covid trip to Raleigh NC…big savings taking a quick Uber trip.

  43. L P B on September 2, 2021 at 11:26 pm

Thanks so much for this video, Matt!

I booked a trip through Expedia to Houston a few months back for my uncle’s funeral. Thrifty Car @ Houston (IAH) wouldn’t accept Allianz Insurance so I had to purchase insurance through Thrifty. I was told by the VERY assertive agent to call Expedia and have them refund what I paid for Allianz since Thrifty doesn’t honor Allianz. After waiting in line for almost 2 hours, I wasn’t about to lose my place to deal with insurance bs. I called Expedia when I got to my hotel and they tried confirming with Thrifty (took almost 4 weeks of emails) but couldn’t get a response so I couldn’t get a refund.

Moral of the story… Check with the car rental company first to see if they’ll honor 3rd party insurance before you book it and have them email that information to you!

  44. Peter on September 2, 2021 at 11:28 pm

How about credit card insurance. My American Express covers me for $25 per rental not per day. So fir a week is only $25. Can you talk about this?

  45. Fdd Dff on September 2, 2021 at 11:29 pm

    budget is hertz

  46. Peter Place on September 2, 2021 at 11:31 pm

I never use insurance when I rent a car,my credit car covers me.

  47. Ted Szweb on September 2, 2021 at 11:31 pm

Doesn’t using most credit cards cover you , so you don’t need to buy their insurance ?

  48. FF Guy2012 on September 2, 2021 at 11:33 pm

I struggle with the insurance too. In the past I had a Chase Sapphire card that provided primary insurance. Now I have an Amex card that I pay $29.99 for the length of the rental and Amex provides primary insurance.

  49. Isaiah Libera on September 2, 2021 at 11:36 pm

The third party coverage has limits to their coverage usually at 35k. This is fine for a cheap car but if your renting an suv or nicer car it may not have enough coverage if something major happens

  50. Barry W on September 2, 2021 at 11:36 pm
